we rushed upon our days
endured divine delays
found awe in the unknown
were true to each his own
we had no fear of danger
and no one was a stranger
till vague familiar yields
swept across our fields
like rustlings in the leaves
or beach towns one believes
will stem the tides of time
with memories sublime
only to discover
quite like an estranged lover
they go the way of change
familiar becomes strange
the child learns to adapt
the rapper gets outrapped
the hunter is the trapped
the murderer gets capped
the best no longer blessed
the rest have all gone west
or north or south or east
they are no more at least
the curdled milk of youth
got moldy and uncooth
the high school athlete jock
is homeless to our shock
the wiz mechanic jack
a tool strung out on crack
the fireman hero clyde
committed suicide
what ill wind blows this way
the pedigree went stray
the hippie went berzerk
and shot the shipping clerk
the sailor came ashore
and goes to sea no more
and none but that old salt
dare say it's charlie's fault
they all just shake their heads
as he shouts through his dreads
something happened to this town
and everything we know is wrong
the atom split and melted down
the morals that once kept us strong
now the deadly swamp gas comes
errosion faster than the dredge
pounding sand like tribal drums
sunk the wall then broke the hedge
implosion factor
trash compactor
obsolete the farm and tractor
nobody knows what he's talking about
mad rantings of man without
three forms of fake i.d.
no more to sail the sea
his proof of presence lost
and no one counts the cost
of toxic self willed winds
and cancer causing sins
the evil heart of man
polluting all the land
corruption in the soul
the beast out of control
and none can save us now
not even sacred cow...
